What To Do in Case of an Accident

Have you been in an accident? Here is what to do:

  1. Stop at the scene no matter how minor the damage may be. A failure to stop can result in criminal consequences.
  2. Render aid to anyone who is injured to the extent that you are qualified. Do not move a severely injured person.
  3. Call 911 and report the accident to the police. If needed, call for medical assistance.
  4. If another vehicle is involved in the accident, gather and write down the following information:
    • Name, address, and phone number of the driver and owner of the vehicle.
    • Makemodel, and color of the vehicle.
    • License plate number and name of insurance company of the vehicle.
    • Full names and phone numbers of any witnesses.
  5. Take photos of the vehicles and their positioning in the roadway.
  6. Do not discuss the crash with anyone other than the police.
  7. Notify your insurance company of the crash as soon as possible, but do not give any written or recorded statements. (Many insurance companies have specific deadlines for reporting and/or submitting claims.)
  8. Take photos to document injuries, preserve other evidence, and make notes of the facts while fresh in your mind.
  9. Consult with an attorney to obtain information on your rights and on the appropriate next steps. If you want to speak with one of our attorneys, you can contact our office at (734) 761-7282.
